US scientists create the ultimate hangover cureCorbis

Hangover season is already in full swing, but that morning-after feeling could soon be a thing of the past thanks to a new over-the-counter remedy.

A single dose of Blowfish can eradicate all hangover symptoms - including nausea, vomiting and fatigue - in just 15 minutes, say the US manufacturers.

The pill, which is hailed as a miracle cure, contains 500 milligrams of aspirin, 60 milligrams of caffeine and an antacid.

It has already launched in the US and is available online. It will be available in the UK next year, costing £1.90 for a single dose and £7.60 for a six-pack.

The groundbreaking formula was discovered by a former financier Brenna Haysom, who came up with the recipe after trying hundreds of hangover cures.

She says: "I started on a quest to find something that really worked and could be taken the morning after drinking.

"After some research, I found a combination that did the trick, fast. I started sharing it with my friends, and they kept asking for more."

Even though she has no pharmaceutical background, she started designing the first remedy in collaboration with New York-based manufacturers Rally Labs LLC.

Her product has now been granted approval by the US Food and Drug Administration, which means it is safe to use.

Hangover sufferers are advised to take two of the effervescent tablets to make them feel better.

Miss Haysom says: "Most of the big drug companies don't necessarily want to be associated with hangovers.

"It's really made from old-fashioned ingredients, after my own personal experimentation I realised that this combination really worked.

"So many people see hangovers as a shameful or embarrassing thing. I think of them as just a fact of life."

Despite this, she denies that the product encourages binge drinking and says: "I definitely don't encourage people to get obliterated."

Report says that breast screening could do 'more harm than good'

Report says that breast screening could do 'more harm than good'Corbis

A new study claims that women could be unnecessarily harmed by routine breast screening, especially during the decade following their first mammogram.

Researchers from the University of Southampton looked at 'harms' such as false positives, where women get abnormal results that turn out to be normal, and over-treatment, which may include surgery on harmless cancers that may never have caused symptoms or death.

They found that in the first few years of screening women were, on average, more likely to be harmed. The greatest benefit was for women aged 60-70, while older women may not live long enough to reap significant benefits.

Professor James Rafferty and his colleague Maria Chorozoglou re-examined data from the 1986 Forrest report that led to the introduction of NHS screening.

The original report used a formula to estimate costs and benefits, but did not include potential harms. It concluded that screening would reduce deaths by one third, with few harms and low cost.

Professor Rafferty brought the report up to date with an analysis of the outcome for 100,000 women aged 50 and over surviving up to 20 years after first being screened.

He said: "At up to eight years, the harms generally outweigh the benefits, but at 20 years there are greater positive benefits."

He added: "There are lots of women who have had surgery who believe their lives were saved when in fact only around one in ten have had their life saved.

"There should be a fundamental overhaul of the screening programme - what's the right time frame and how cost-effective is it?

"We need trials to look at who is most likely to benefit from surgery and for measuring the levels and duration of the harms from surgery."

A spokesperson for the Department of Health said that it would look at the findings of the independent review but added: "Our advice has not changed - we urge all women to go for breast screening when invited.

"The best available evidence shows screening saves lives by detecting cancers earlier than they would otherwise have been."

Is a killer cleavage the best way to attract a man?Getty

If you're hoping for a festive romance this year, a new survey suggests that a plunging neckline and a push-up bra could be the best way to get yourself noticed.

The survey, which was commissioned by lingerie brand Ultimo, found that 80 per cent of women will be making the most of their assets with a push-up bra during the party season.

And it seems as if all this effort won't go unnoticed as 75 per cent of men surveyed said that they were looking forward to seeing their female colleagues swap their work clothes for something a bit more revealing.

And if you've ever caught a man talking to your chest you won't be surprised to hear that a further 35 per cent said that cleavage is the first thing they notice in a woman.

Michelle Mone OBE, who founded Ultimo said: "Having a full, sculpted cleavage gives instant sex appeal and boosts your confidence as well as your shape, and a well-fitting bra will also make your silhouette appear instantly slimmer. Perfect for turning heads at the Christmas party and all year round."

She revealed last month that sales were up 25 per cent and, despite the downturn, her company MJM International, saw sales exceed £10million for the first time last year thanks to products such as the OMG bra which boosts cleavage by two cup sizes.

Ultimo is available at www.ultimo.co.uk and at Debenhams stores nationwide.

Jane Fonda releases new fitness DVDs for older women

Jane Fonda releases new fitness DVDs for older womenGetty

There was a time, back in the 80s, when every woman was 'going for the burn' in her living room, following Jane Fonda's workout DVD.

Now, almost 30 years after she released the original version, Jane has made two new ones - and they're aimed at baby boomers who want to stay fit so that they can play with their grandchildren.

Yesterday Jane appeared on US TV programme The Today Show and admitted: "I can't do everything I used to do.

"I realised that no one is doing videos for people like me, who can't do what they used to do... or maybe people who have never exercised in their lives. It's never too late.

"The new workouts are less about looking a certain way and more about doing things in everyday life," she explained.

"You want to be able to hold your grandkids and turn over your shoulder in the car, you want to stay independent for as long as possible."

Jane's orignal aerobics video revolutionised home fitness - and she's hoping that her new Prime Time workouts will also be big hits.

The first contains three low-impact aerobic workouts and the second contains two workouts for the upper and lower body.

She says: "It's important to exercise when you are younger but it's like the number one ingredient for successful ageing. It makes a difference for all aspects of your life and your body.

"When you get older your brain shrinks but by staying physically active you can minimise the brain shrinkage and postpone Alzheimer's and things like that."

Alcohol diseases double in seven yearsGetty

New figures reveal that hospital admissions for alcohol-related diseases have doubled in the last seven years.

Nearly 1.2 million people in England needed in-patient hospital treatment for alcohol-related cancers, liver diseases and poisoning in 2010-11 - a nine per cent rise on the previous year.

So far this year, there have already been over 7,000 hospital admissions for young people under the age of 18.

In the light of this, Health Minister Andrew Lansley is now being forced to defend his 'hands off' approach to public health. He has been accused of pandering to big business by ignoring advice from alcohol experts.

He was criticised for including the drinks industry in his 'responsibility deals' which aim to encourage voluntary changes rather than legislation to increase the price of alcoholic drinks and limit advertising.

Diane Abbott, the shadow Public Health minister, said: "It is clear that this Government is rapidly pushing us towards a binge-drinking crisis.

What do you think is the best way to tackle the binge drinking crisis? Let us know below...

Jennifer Aniston has been named Sexiest Woman of All Time by readers of Men's Health, beating Angelina Jolie, who made tenth place.

She was joined in the top five by Raquel Welch, Marilyn Monroe, Britney Spears and Madonna.

A spokesman for Men's Health says that is isn't just Jen's good looks and perfectly toned bod that won her the title.

"Funny is sexy, and Jennifer Aniston is funny," said a spokesperson for the publication. "Her down-to-earth persona makes her seem attainable and anyone who's seen her in Office Space has to admit she makes even pieces of flair look good.

"She rarely plays the airhead, and she seldom overplays a role; she's funny in a quiet, refreshingly human way."

When asked for her choice of the sexiest woman of all time, Jennifer couldn't choose between Brigitte Bardot and American feminist Gloria Steinem.

She said: "It's a tie between Brigitte Bardot and Gloria Steinem," she said. "But if I had to choose one I'd say Gloria because, well, she's the full package. That's sexy."

Could eating two takeaways a week cause diabetes?

Could eating two takeaways a week cause diabetes?PA

Do you regularly look forward to an evening out of the kitchen and tucking in to your favourite takeaway treats?

Unfortunately for us lazy cooks and curry aficionados out there, research has found that having two takeaway meals or more could increase the risk of diabetes.

Type one diabetes, which is caused by the immune system not working properly, affects 10% of people in Britain.

Type two diabetes, which is associated with a poor diet and lifestyle, causes the remaining 90% of cases.

The study, which was carried out by researchers at the University of Tasmania, looked at the diet and exercise habits of 1,896 male and female participants.

Four in 10 men and two in 10 women had a takeaway twice a week or more.

The study showed that women who ate two takeaways or more had higher blood sugar levels than the women who ate one or less a week.

Men also showed raised blood sugar levels, but the effect was not as marked as it was for women.

The females who ate two takeaways or more also showed more indication of becoming insulin-resistant, which can lead to type two diabetes.

The researchers, whose work was published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, wrote: "It is unclear whether the differences [between one takeaway a week and two] are clinically significant. But they may represent an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type two diabetes."

Are takeaways a harmless treat or a slippery slope to bad health? Let us know below...

Liz Hurley says ageing doesn't mean looking less goodZest magazine

Elizabeth Hurley has revealed she thinks getting older is no reason to stop looking great in an interview with Zest magazine.

The 46-year-old actress, designer and model showed off her amazing figure in her self-designed swimwear collection.

She explained: "I love women looking fabulous and I don't think growing older means looking less good."

"For me, it's less about trying to looking younger and more about making sure you look your absolute best."

"Without doubt, once I hit 40 I had to make more effort and it wasn't until then I realised how much easier it was when I was younger."

"Back then, I could look pretty good on three hours sleep. Now, I look like a lunatic if I don't get at least double that."

"In my 20s I used to be able to exist on coffee, cigarettes and crisps, but again, a couple of days of that now and I'd look and feel really scary!"

Elizabeth said her relationship with her fiancé Shane Warne helped her stay motivated: "Shane is very disciplined when he has to be but, bizarrely, I eat at least three times more than him because I'm far greedier and think about food all day long."

"He's naturally very athletic because he's been a professional sportsman for over 20 years. He keeps threatening to make me run with him, but I've resisted so far!"

She credited a wholesome diet for helping her to stay in shape, explaining: "I almost never eat anything from a tin or a packet and the same goes for over the festive season."

"I'm passionate about home-cooked food and am convinced that eating a lot of packaged and processed food encourages weight gain."

One-Pot Winter Warmers: French onion soup

One-Pot Winter Warmers: French onion soupHelen Graves

For me, French onion is the king of all soups. It's amazing that just a few ingredients, patiently nurtured, can make something so incredibly hearty.

It's astonishing, the complexity of flavour that can be achieved simply by properly caramelising some onions. This is the secret to making the best French onion soup you see; the onions must be coaxed to release their sugars, over a very low heat, very slowly, for at least an hour but preferably two.

Onion soups have been popular since Roman times at least, but the modern version as we know it - an onion base with beef stock and a cheesy crouton topping - originated in 18th century France.

The onions are first cooked down in butter and salt, to draw out their moisture and begin caramelisation. As I said, this should never be rushed, although they do require a gentle stir now and then. Towards the end of cooking, you will be left with a pot of sticky, golden alliums and some important brown bits clinging to the bottom of the pan; these are precious little crusty bits of flavour, to be released by de-glazing with a good slug of Cognac or sherry.

The croutons are made by topping sliced baguette with fruity Gruyere cheese (ideal for melting), before being baked in the oven, to get them really crisp. This helps them to hold their shape as they rest on the top of the soup. If you can't find Gruyere, use a cheese that likes to melt, such as Cheddar. It's not very French, but it will still be damn tasty.

French Onion Soup (serves 4)
1kg regular brown-skinned onions, cut in half and sliced
About 30g butter
1.5 litres hot beef stock (this could be swapped for vegetable stock)
About 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
A splash of Cognac or sherry
Baguette
Gruyere cheese (or Cheddar if you can't find Gruyere)
1 clove garlic, peeled and cut in half

Begin the soup about two hours before you want to eat it. Start by melting the butter in a large pan and add the onions, plus a good sprinkle of salt (this helps draw moisture from the onions) and pepper. Give everything a good stir and set over your lowest heat, with a lid on, leaving a little gap on one side. Let the onions cook down very slowly for 1.5-2 hours, stirring occasionally.

The onions are ready when they're golden, extremely soft and not too wet. At this point, turn your oven on to 200c, ready to make the croutons. Go back to the onions, turn up the heat and slosh in the Cognac or sherry, stirring to lift the good stuff from the bottom of the pan. Add the hot beef stock next, along with a teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves and a little black pepper. Once boiling, turn down the heat and let the soup simmer for about 15 minutes while you make the croutons.

Slice some baguette at an angle to get a nice shape, then rub each piece with the cut garlic clove. Cover with sliced cheese and bake on a lightly oiled tray for about 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling.

Place the soup into serving bowls and nestle a cheesy crouton on top. Sprinkle with fresh thyme leaves and serve.

Professor warns detoxes are dangerous

Professor warns detoxes are dangerousGetty

If every mince pie you eat this Christmas comes with a mental promise to detox in January, you might not be doing your body any favours.

While you can buy a host of supplements which claim to rid your body of excess toxins or go on a fruit and salad diet to purge the excesses of the festive season, you could be wasting your money.

A biochemistry expert has said detoxes are a "meaningless marketing term" and could be bad for your health.

Professor David Bender, an emeritus professor of nutritional biochemistry at University College London, has published an articled called 'The Detox Delusion' in The Biologist magazine.

He wrote: "I am not sure what "self-healing" is and the idea of 'raised energy levels' is nonsense."

"'The whole philosophy of detox is based on the unlikely premise that accumulated toxins cause a sluggish metabolism, weight gain, general malaise and so on."

"Weight gain is due to an imbalance between food consumption and energy expenditure. There is no magic shortcut for weight loss - you have to eat less and exercise more. It's that simple."

Professor Bender said the claims of detox diets were at best "unfounded" and at worst "dangerous" to health.

Kay Burley says her facelift was 'deeply traumatic'Getty/PA

Sky News presenter Kay Burley only took three weeks to have a facelift, recover and get back to the studio.

However she admitted that after having the plastic surgery she found it hard to even look at herself in the mirror.

Kay bought the lower face and neck lift surgery as a present for herself after celebrating her fiftieth birthday this year.

She told the Times: "It's a deeply traumatic procedure."

"It's not painful at all, but when you look at yourself in the mirror, you think, 'I'm never going to be me again'."

The presenter had eye surgery a decade ago after she turned 40 and said her decision to have the operations wasn't due to her celebrity status.

She added that people said: "It's because you're on the telly. No, it's because I'm a woman and I want to look nice."

"If Mother Nature needs a helping hand, why not?"

Pippa Middleton goes on a date with her ex-boyfriendPA

It appears that Pippa Middleton is on excellent terms with her ex-boyfriends.

The well-groomed sister of the Duchess of Cambridge was spotted having dinner with her ex-boyfriend, banking heir J.J. Jardine-Paterson.

Pippa dated the 29-year-old for three years after they met as students at Edinburgh University.

Pippa has also been seen in the company of former flames George Percy and Charlie Astor, after splitting from partner Alex Loudon in November.

According to the Sun, an onlooker at the hotel restaurant where they dined commented: "Pippa looked really happy and relaxed in a striking orange blouse. It is clear they have history. They seemed keen to keep themselves to themselves."

After dinner at the Crown Hotel in Woodbridge in Suffolk, the couple were met by friends for drinks before they were spotted leaving in the same car.

The following day the pair were seen attending the wedding of a mutual friend.

A source said it wouldn't be surprising if they got back together: "They've remained good friends and now she's single again we wouldn't rule it out."

"JJ ticks all the right boxes - he's good-looking, sporty, and is from a wealthy family."

Dramatic results for tumour-busting cancer vaccine

Dramatic results for tumour-busting cancer vaccinePA

Researchers have created a vaccine which has shown significant tumour-shrinking effects in laboratory tests.

The vaccine reduced the size of breast cancer tumours by 80% and could be used to treat seven in 10 cancers, scientists said.

The study was carried out on mice, but the team want to perform human trials within the next two years, as the results were so promising.

The scientists, from the Mayo Clinic and the University of Georgia, targeted a particular protein called MUC1 that is created in higher amounts in cancer cells than in healthy ones.

The protein is covered with a sugar that has a recognisable shape, which allowed scientists to use the vaccine to make the immune system identify the sugar and fight against it.

The misshapen MUC1 sugar appears in 90% of breast and pancreatic cancers, and approximately 60% of prostate cancers.

Professor Sandra Gendler, one of the researchers, said: "Cancer cells have a special way of thwarting the immune system by putting sugars on the surface of tumour cells so they can travel around the body without being detected."

"To enable the immune system to recognise the sugar, it took a special vaccine that had three parts to it. That turned out to be a winning combination."

Co-author Professor Geert-Jan Boons said: "This vaccine elicits a very strong immune response. It activates all three components of the immune system to reduce tumour size by an average of 80%."

She added: "We are beginning to have therapies that can teach our immune system to fight what is uniquely found in cancer cells. When combined with early diagnosis, the hope is that one day cancer will become a manageable disease."

Do you think cancer will become a 'manageable disease' or not? Let us know below...

"This Christmas is about celebrating my fab year," the 34-year-old explained, referring to the sold-out Steps tour and her appearance on Children In Need.

"I finally feel my weight isn't the first thing on everyone's lips - it's all about Steps and where I'm heading in the future."

Photographed in a sexy red and white festive outfit for the magazine, Claire radiated confidence, adding: "I'm happy the way I am - I'm just me."

"If the likes of Diana Dors and Marilyn Monroe can be curvy but still sexy, I'll happily have them as role models!" she said.

Claire revealed her five stone weight loss in March, when she went from a size 18 to a size 10 and posed in a bikini for the magazine.

She then posed for Closer in June for a nude photo shoot which showed her weight gain from a size 10 to a size 16.

She said at the time: "I might not be a size 10, but I don't think I look that bad - I certainly don't think I'm hideous like I used to."

"I'm having fun with fashion again too, as my curves fit quite well into high street clothes. But I'm determined not to get bigger than a size 16 as I still feel fit and anything heavier would feel a bit much for me."

This week's special double Christmas issue of Closer magazine is on sale now (Tuesday).

Is Mary Portas right to say Britain's high streets are in crisis? PA

Retail guru Mary Portas has warned that Britain's high streets could be lost unless "urgent action" is taken.

Mary has written a report, which was commissioned by Prime Minister David Cameron back in May, which is released today.

She said decades of "erosion, neglect and mismanagement" had caused the decay of many high streets and "much of Britain will lose, irretrievably, something that is fundamental to our society."

One in seven shops on UK high streets are currently empty, with some towns having as many as 40% of high street shops unoccupied.

The review of Britain's high streets said: "Many [high streets] are sickly, others are on the critical list and some are now dead."

"The days of a high street populated simply by independent butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers are, except in the most exceptional circumstances, over."

The report sets out 28 recommendations for reviving the health of the high street, which are expected to include an increase in the cost of parking out of town, lowering restrictions on night deliveries and holding a national annual market day.

"I believe that our high streets can be lively, dynamic, exciting and social places that give a sense of belonging and trust to a community. A sense of belonging which, as the recent riots demonstrated, has been eroded and in some instances eradicated," Mary explained.

Why are 40% of drugs given in hospital administered incorrectly?PA

Going into hospital can be an anxious experience, especially as we have to entrust our health to the hands of other people.

A worrying report published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing has found that four in 10 doses of medication were incorrectly administered in hospitals in Britain.

The study, from the University of East Anglia, looked at healthcare workers from different hospitals as they gave patients 2,129 doses of medication.

They found nurses gave 18 out of 49 doses of Parkinson's medication more than an hour late, which could have stopped patients walking or caused their symptoms to get worse.

Healthcare workers also did not flush tubes before giving drugs and used the incorrect syringes to put drugs into feeding tubes, the study showed.

The researchers said 817 errors were made and patients who had problems swallowing had triple the risk of incorrectly administered medication than patients who did not.

Professor David Wright, the report's supervisor, said: "It is very apparent that patients with swallowing difficulties seem to be at greater risk of medication administration errors and therefore systems need to be reviewed to improve the quality of their care."
