A quarter of Brits are obese but most don't realise itGetty

A study has found one in four people in Britain are obese, but most do not know it.

The survey, carried out by Slimming World, showed a quarter of Britons were classified by their BMI as obese, yet only 6% realised they fell into this category.

The poll of 2,065 people in Britain also showed that 75% of people in the obese category underestimated how overweight they were.

Dr Jacquie Lavin, head of nutrition and research at Slimming World, said: "This worrying new data reveals the complex psychological issues associated with being overweight."

"Many people, including many health professionals, believe that managing weight is just about energy balance, and that people simply need to eat less and exercise more."

"However, that approach can never work while so many people deny how severely their weight could be affecting their health, or while they struggle with the emotional burden of being overweight, which can affect their confidence in their ability to make healthy lifestyle changes."

The most recently published government data showed nearly two thirds (60%) of adults and one third of children aged 10 and 11 are overweight.

A recent Bupa Health Pulse poll found that 40% of obese people believed they were actually a healthy weight.

Are obese people really unaware of their weight or just hiding from the truth? Let us know below...

"A lot of people don't like pain. But when it starts hurting, that's the point where I want to make them do another set, then another set and just a few more reps after that."

Tamaya "The Pussycat" Adams, 32, who has trained model Kelly Brook, said: "Someone projectile vomited on me once."

Another trainer, 42-year-old Dahlia "The Diva" Mikneviciute, explained the trainers were certainly not shy in the bedroom: "We say to our partners, 'Can you switch the lights on, please? I've worked really hard for this body, switch on the lights!"

Flushing the toilet with the lid open could spread winter vomiting bug

Flushing the toilet with the lid open could spread winter vomiting bugGetty

Closing the lid before you flush could help to protect you and your family from the norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, say experts.

That's because flushing with the lid open can release a cloud of bacteria into the air as soon as you flush.

According to Professor Mark Wilcox, Clinical Director of Microbiology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, bacteria from inside the loo can settle on nearby surfaces, making it easier for viruses to spread from person to person.

A team of researchers, led by Professor Wilcox, conducted study to see how a toilet lid could affect the spread of disease, particularly in hospitals.

They used a sterilised toilet cubicle and created a 'diarrhoea effect' in the toilet bowl using stool samples that had been infected with the hospital superbug C. difficile.

They found that the bacteria was transported to 10 inches above the toilet seat when the lid was open and was still detectable in the air up to 90 minutes later.

When the lid was closed, none of the bacteria was found on any surface, but when it was open it was found on the cistern, to the left and right of the toilet seat and on the floor.

Professor Wilcox said that although it's unlikely that keeping the lid up would be a "huge" health hazard, he explains: "It would be prudent if there is a lid to put it down after flushing.

"This contains smells and droplets that can become aerolised. Some bugs spread more easily to surfaces this way and the norovirus is thought to be one of them.

"Our advice - put the lid down if it's there and wash your hands afterwards."

Government gives clinics until Friday to submit date on faulty breast implants

Government gives clinics until Friday to submit date on faulty breast implantsGetty

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has given clinics until Friday to submit data on burst, perished and broken breast implants made my French firm PIP to the medical watchdog.

The full results will then be published next week and this could mean that the government will rethink the current advice that says there is no need for women to have them removed.

About 40,000 British women have the implants and removing them could cost £150million.

At least 50 clinics have already reported problems with the implants, and although the total number of women whose implants have ruptured is not yet known, it could be as high as 1,000.

There is growing concern about the safety of the implants, and Dr Vikram Vijh, a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, says that the implants were eight times cheaper than standard types - even though women were charged the usual rate of £4,500 - £6,000 for the surgery.

He told The Sun that clinics paid £130 a pair compared to the normal price of £1,000 and says that this "should have rung deafening alarm bells."

He says: "We all knew they were poor quality."

Although the implants have not been linked to cancer, French scientists have found that they contain a range of potentially harmful chemicals, including a fuel additive and substances used in rubber tubing.

The French medical regulator AFFSAPS has reported that 1,140 women in France had suffered ruptured PIP implants and, of these, more than 500 had "inflammatory reactions" which could make surgical removal more difficult.

France has recommended the removal of the implants and has said that it will foot the bill, but the British government has advised women to wait until the outcome of its review.

Fazel Fatah, president of the British Assoiation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, who is advising Mr Lansley, said: "The point is not so much the rupture rates but that the quality of the silicone in these implants is not of medical grade. Therefore the implants are not fit to be implanted into humans."

Have scientists found the secret to eternal youth?

Have scientists found the secret to eternal youth?Jupiter Images

American scientists believe that they have taken the first step towards creating a drug that could prevent premature ageing and help people to live three times longer.

An experiment has proved that a single injection of stem cells could help mice to live three times longer and could also make them grow bigger and stronger.

They now think that studying the proteins within stem cells could hold the key to developing injections that could hold off the ageing process altogether.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh say that the effect was visible on cells in a lab dish where young stem cells were placed next to prematurely ageing cells. The sick, ageing cells performed better after being placed next to the healthy ones.

In experiments, injecting stem cells into 17 day-old mice saw their lifespans increase from an average of 21-28 days to more than 66 days.

The mice, which had been modified to age prematurely as a result of a condition called progeria which also affects humans, also grew almost as large as their healthy counterparts and grew new blood vessels in their brains and muscles.

Scientists believe that this is because the healthy stem cells helped correct abnormalities in the cells of the ageing mice.

Study author Dr Laura Niedernhofer, whose findings were published in the journal Nature Communications, said: "Our experiments showed that mice that have progeria, a disorder of premature ageing, were healthier and lived longer after an injection of stem cells from young, healthy animals.

"That tells us that stem cell dysfunction is a cause of the changes we see with ageing."

Brain pacemaker could cure depression

Brain pacemaker could cure depressionGetty

Scientists say that people who don't respond to drug treatments for depression and bipolar disorder could be cured with the help of a brain pacemaker.

The device, which is implanted under the skull, has two thin wire electrodes which send electrical impulses to either side of the brain.

The other end of each wire is connected under the skin of the patient's neck to a pulse generator implanted in the chest that directs the electrical current.

The electrical stimulation can be adjusted as symptoms change, and the experimental treatment is considered to be relatively safe.

Scientists at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia conducted a trial among patients who suffered from severe depression or bipolar disorder.

Seventeen participants received single-blind stimulation for tour weeks (they didn't know if the system was turned on or off), followed by active stimulation for four weeks.

They found that 41 per cent of patients responded to the treatment and one in five went into remission after just six months.

After two years of stimulation, 92 per cent had responded to the treatment and 58 per cent had achieved remission.

Experts don't yet know how or why the treatment works and researchers are still trying to establish the best locations for implants.

Paul Holtzheimer, who co-authored the research, said: "Most of these patients have been in a depressed state for many years and are disabled and isolated.

"As their depression improves, they need a process to help them achieve full recovery that includes integration back into society.

"We hope to optimise the rate of improvement for these patients by using a model of care that provides psychotherapeutic rehabilitation built on evidence-based psychotherapy but tailored to the specific individual's situation."

Australian tourist may have contracted HIV from Bali tattooAFP/Getty

Holidaymakers have been advised not to have tattoos on the resort island of Bali after an Australian man is believed to have been infected with HIV.

Australian health officials are urging travellers who have been tattooed on the island recently to consider getting tested for HIV and other blood-bourne viruses and Indonesia has launched an investigation into the matter.

More than a million tourists visit Bali each year and Gede Putra Suteja, head of the Badung district health agency in the Kuta area, believes that there is a strong possibility that the tourist contracted the virus at a tattoo parlour.

Nyoman Sutedja of the Bali health department said: "We received a report about this case from the health ministry yesterday and officials will be visiting tattoo parlours to verify this claim.

"At this point we are still investigating. We can't say for sure if the patient caught the virus from getting a tattoo or sexual contact."

Investigations are centring on the many tattoo parlours in the Kuta area, along with artists who work on the beachfront.

Officials said last year that the number of known HIV/AIDS cases on Bali was soaring and there are currently 4,200 cases on the island.

A statement from Western Australian's Department of Health said: "All the evidence points to a tattoo received recently in Bali as being the source of inception."

Nicki's fitness tip: Fab abs fun

Nicki's fitness tip: Fab abs funDanone Activia

Try these essential exercises for a marvellous midsection - we've included the beginner's workout here too, so that if you've got time you can use them to warm up and test your performance.

Your abs are one of the easiest muscle groups to train at anytime in your own home. Besides looking great, a toned midsection is the core foundation of a healthy back, because strong abdominals will help give your torso the stability and support necessary to protect your back from injury.

Here are a few points to remember to make sure you target the right muscle group correctly:
  1. Work your abdominal muscles correctly by concentrating on your abs doing all the work to curl your head and shoulder blades off the floor in upper-ab movements. Never anchor your feet underneath an object.

  2. Ensure proper form and spine alignment by making sure your knees are bent and your feet are flat on the floor (or up). This helps protect your lower back. Place your hands lightly behind your head and look up toward the ceiling. To prevent neck pain, make sure your chin is far enough off your chest that you could place your fist under your jaw.

  3. Make sure your lower back always remains in contact with the floor in upper ab movements. Crunch any higher than this and you'll use your hip-flexor muscles to pull yourself up.

  4. Visualize your abdominal muscles and concentrate on squeezing and holding the contraction at the top of the movement, focusing all your attention on the targeted region.

  5. Stretch your abs between sets to avoid cramping. To do this, lie on your stomach (press-up position with your elbows next to your body) and press your pelvis into the floor while pushing through the palms of your hands to extend your arms (often called a cobra stretch). Make sure your pelvis remains in contact with the floor while you stretch your abs. Breathe deeply and relax your muscles further to increase the stretch.

  6. Practice proper breathing. Exhale as you rise up and inhale as you lower back down. Failure to breathe properly could cause cramping and dizziness and, in extreme cases, loss of consciousness.

These ab exercises take only a few minutes, and if you follow them consistently with a healthy diet, they can help you develop the often-coveted set of washboard abs. You'll want to perform each of the following recommended exercises three to four days a week, aiming for one to three sets of 10-15 repetitions to begin with. As you become more advanced, increase the reps to 20-25. If you're using the right intensity and technique you shouldn't be able to manage more than 25-30 repetitions. If you can do more, you may need to tighten your form or increase your intensity by contracting hard at the top of each rep.

Beginners

Frog Crunches

Target: This exercise forces you to keep your lower abs contracted so your back doesn't arch.

Technique: Lie down on the floor. Bend your knees and let them fall to the sides. Keep your feet together. Next, hold your head with your hands and lift your chin away from your chest. Contract your stomach and slowly lift both shoulders off the floor. Rock your hips forward, pause at the top and lower back to start.

Nicki's Tip: To get the best isolation, always keep your lower back pressed into the floor.

Intermediate

One Leg V-Crunches Target

A great way to target both the upper and lower abs.

Technique: In a basic crunch position, bend one knee so the foot is flat on the floor. Straighten the other leg, holding it a few inches off the floor. Use your upper abs to raise your torso. Squeeze your lower abs and bring your knee as close to your face as you can, while keeping your lower back pressed into the floor. Flex your abs at the top and return to the start. Switch legs and repeat.

Nicki's Tip: Never let your shoulders or leg touch the floor. Try to keep your abs contracted throughout the entire exercise.

Nicki's fitness tip: Beautiful buttocksDanone Activia

A fast way to a firmer bottom

It only takes a few minutes a day to get gorgeous! You can even do these exercises during ad breaks while you're watching telly.

These are three of my all-time favourite butt exercises to help you get things back up where they belong. Use one to three kilo weights in each hand (half litre bottles of water will do). Whether you're a beginner or already fit, remember to begin your workout with a short warm-up, walking or marching in place with simple arm movements. Then stretch your major muscle groups.

The Lunge

Technique: With your feet together, holding a weight in each hand and with arms hanging by your sides, palms in, take a step forwards with your left leg, leading with your heel. Plant your foot down and dip downwards. Bend both knees as far as you can or until your right knee touches the ground (make sure your left knee is directly over your ankle). Straighten up and then go back down again into the lunge position. Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions on each leg.

Nicki's Tip: Don't place stress on the knee by taking too short a step forward, forcing the knee to bend beyond your toes. Also keep your abs tight and chest lifted throughout, and your shoulders above your hips on the downward movement.

Single-Leg Squats

Technique: Stand with your feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent and toes pointing forwards. Lift your right foot several inches off the floor, extending your leg in front of you, foot relaxed and knee slightly bent. Extend your arms in front of you. Tightening the abs, bend your left knee as much as you can while holding your balance, keeping weight distributed throughout the foot. Hold for two counts, then rise back to starting position. Complete one set of 15 repetitions, then switch legs; repeat for another two sets.

Nicki's Tip: Be sure to keep your body weight in your heels, and don't let your knees extend beyond your toes.

Bridge Thigh Lift

Technique: Lie on your back with your left knee above your left hip, knee bent 90 degrees and your foot in the air. Straighten your arms by your sides with your hands away from your body for a wide base of support. Tilt your pelvis up and raise your hips until your body is in a straight line. Keeping hips lifted and steady, open your left thigh out to the side and then slowly bring your knee back in above the hip. Do three sets of 20 repetitions, then switch legs.

Nicki's Tip: Keep your abs tight throughout.

Scientists discover the deafness gene

Scientists discover the deafness geneGetty

Scientists have identified a single gene that they think could be linked to age-related deafness.

Hearing loss affects half of people over the age of 60 and this discovery could eventually lead to a treatment for this type of deafness.

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine found that when the FGF20 gene was taken out in mice, they appeared otherwise healthy - but couldn't hear at all.

They then found that two-thirds of their outer hair cells, the delicate cells in the inner ear which amplify sounds, had disappeared.

Damage to these cells is related to most hearing loss associated with old age, noise exposure and some genetic conditions.

Our bodies have no way to replace these cells, so there is currently no cure - although hearing aids can help.

But now scientists believe that this gene, which is also found in humans, could be crucial to attempts to grow new hair cells, which could be the key to finding a successful treatment.

The next step in the research, which is already underway, is to find out whether deafness in humans is linked to mutations of the same gene.

Professor Karen Steel, who is an expert in the genetics of deafness at the Sanger Institute in Cambridge, told the Daily Mail: "I would say regenerating hair cells in humans is between 10 and 20 years away.

"It's a very complicated problem as there are so many genes potentially involved, it's like a 1,000-piece puzzle, but this brings us a bit closer."

Mother-of-three Helen Elverson looks delighted to be crowned Yummy Mummy Slimmer of the Year 2012.

The 33-year-old admitted she used to binge on huge amounts of food - including five packets of crisps a day - after she had her children.

She said: "It wasn't just baby cravings, it was me being a pig and I reckon I was getting through 4,000 calories some days...I had no interests, no hobbies and no social life."

Helen described her former self as "hefty" and said she weighed 19 stone and was a size 24. She lost 8 stone 7lb in just over a year, taking her to 10 stone 7lb and a size 10.

Helen was one of eight slimmers who took the top prizes at the Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Magazine Slimmers of the Year 2012, who have lost an incredible 67 stone between them.

Winner of the 50+ Slimmer of the Year award is Jane Hall, who lost 7 stone 5lb over 18 months.

Why sex really does improve with ageGetty

A new study has found that almost two thirds of older women say they are happy with their sex lives.

According to research carried out at the University of San Diego, 61% of women up to the age of 80 reported they were satisfied in the bedroom.

The research, published in the American Journal of Medicine, also showed 67% of older women said they had an orgasm "always" or "most of the time" when they had sex.

Around half of women aged 80 and over said they had an orgasm "most of the time" even though they had lower sex drives.

The author of the study, Dr Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, said: "Despite a correlation between sexual desire and other sexual function domains, only one in five sexually active women reported high sexual desire."

"Approximately half of the women aged 80 or older reported arousal and orgasm most of the time, but rarely reported sexual desire."

Co-author Dr Susan Trompeter added: "Not only were the oldest women in this study the most satisfied overall, those who were recently sexually active experienced orgasm satisfaction rates similar to the youngest participants."

"We found sexual activity was not always necessary for sexual satisfaction. Those who were not sexually active may have achieved sexual satisfaction through touching, caressing, or other intimacies developed over the course of a long relationship."

"Emotional and physical closeness to the partner may be more important than experiencing orgasm. A more positive approach to female sexual health focusing on sexual satisfaction may be more beneficial to women than a focus limited to female sexual activity or dysfunction."

Why is death rate in some parts of Britain higher than Rwanda?

Why is death rate in some parts of Britain higher than Rwanda?PA

New government figures have suggested that death rates in deprived areas of Britain are higher than those of some African countries.

According to data released by the Office of National Statistics from the World Health Organization, death rates in Bryncethin in Bridgend, South Wales are 1,499 per 100,000 people while the rates for Rwanda in Africa are 1,427 per 100,000 people.

The ward of Whittington in Oswestry had 1,468 deaths per 100,000 in 2009, while there were 1,452 in Botswana.

The third highest death rate in England and Wales was in Portrack and Tilery in Stockton-on-Tees (1,422), followed by wards in Wrexham, Hull, Halton, Penwith and St Helens.

Experts have said the data showed the poverty of former industrial centres which had impacted on the health of people living there.

Prof Philip Hanlon, Professor of Public Health at the University of Glasgow, told the Telegraph: "The simple truth is that there are small areas in the poorer parts of the UK that have similar or lower life expectancies than some developing countries."

"This is a dramatic way to highlight health inequalities in the UK but it is a little misleading because one is comparing a small population of often a few hundred or at most low thousands of UK citizens who share a 'deprived' ecology with a whole country."

Professor Ian Harvey, Chair of the Faculty of Public Health's Research Committee, said: "I think a case could be made that the mortality experience in these poorly performing UK wards are not very different from say the data for the wealthier African countries as a whole."
